Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl admitted his side were ‘far away’ from delivering a performance capable of avoiding defeat at West Ham on the final day of the 2020/21 season.

Falling to a 3-0 loss, it brought the curtain down on a difficult second half of the campaign for Saints, who ended up 15th in the Premier League.

Commenting after the defeat at London Stadium, Hasenhüttl said: “It looked like we were closer to something than it was, because we were far away from defending how we should in such a game, like always here.

“I don’t know why, to be honest, because the way we conceded the goals again was far too easy. We don’t even run with them, we let them run to our goal.

“You see how much tougher it is for our strikers to score goals, but we had a few chances - especially at the beginning - but it’s very disappointing for me.

“We know how West Ham plays and congratulations for their successful run, they deserve to be in the Europa League and deserved to win against us today.

“Although we started very well, what can you do from 30 minutes when you don’t score in that moment and then concede easy goals, then it’s never possible to win a game.

“We have to change a lot and massively,” he added when commenting on next season. “This is the fact for the new season because we need to adapt to the reality check, and this is a clear picture what we have.

“When you want to achieve more than staying safe in the league - and this is what we managed this season - then you have to change a lot because otherwise I don’t see why we should end up higher in the league, to be honest.”
