The opening of Weston Secondary School’s new sports hall, Friday July 5th, saw familiar names to Saints fans as the school celebrates the greater access to sports its students will now have.

As Weston is part of the Community Champions programme, Saints Foundation Ambassador Sam McQueen was among those names. From badminton to basketball, the former Saints full back got stuck in with the students testing the new facilities.

Former Saints and Weston Alumni Aaron Martin was also be present for the opening of the new sports hall, which has also been kitted out with new equipment to ensure the hall is fit for purpose and students have excellent resources to enjoy and thrive within the enriched PE curriculum.

Weston Secondary School Headteacher, David Butterworth, said: “Our amazing new sports hall will have a significant impact on the quality of physical education that we offer at the school, and we can now proudly say that our incredibly talented students will get the best facilities available to further develop their skills.”

Saints Foundation Community Champions programme has used the power of the Southampton FC badge to support students in bolstering their self-esteem, aspirations and reaching their potential through a range of interventions and workshops.

Kieran Thornton, the Community Champion for Weston Secondary School, said: “Working with students everyday, I have no doubt how much this new space will benefit them and help them engage. We have often seen how much physical activity can make a huge difference to students day to day.”

Saints Foundation have Community Champions based in schools across the city as part of the work they do in helping young people thrive and make the most of time in school.
