How we’re supporting Green Football Weekend

The football community is one of the biggest in the world and we have the means to change the planet for the better. Climate change impacts all of us, so this weekend, through our sustainability strategy The Halo Effect, we’ll be taking part in Green Football Weekend – and we want you to join us.

The theme of Green Football Weekend (GFW) 2024 is ‘Transferring to Veg’, encouraging us to try a veggie option - whether that's cooking a veggie meal at home or choosing a veggie snack at the match.

In support of that aim, we’ll be offering the following at our game against Crystal Palace Women on Sunday 4th February:

  • 500 packs of tomato seeds to be given out to fans

  • Free vegan cupcake for the first 120 fans

  • Free soup will be served in the Gasworks

  • Reduction on the price of vegan food by 25%

  • The post-match meal for both the home and away teams will be plant based

  • One of the food stalls outside the stadium will be Fire & Rocket Pizza – they’ll be serving vegan pizza, including the recipe submitted by the club to the Green Football Weekend Veggie Cookbook

It goes without saying what we eat impacts our health and performance. Eating more veg helps reduce injuries, improve recovery times, increase circulation and can even save you money.

It helps protect our world too. If the UK’s football fans had one veggie meal a day, it’d be the equivalent of taking 5.5 million cars off the road every year.

If you’re looking for inspiration, check out the free Green Football Weekend Veggie Cookbook:

GFW cookbook

It’s packed with recipes from players, club nutritionists and chefs, including Kyle Walker-Peters, Russell Martin and Saints chef, Ayrton Proctor.

Climate change affects all of us and it's threatening the future of football. We already see 150,000 games cancelled each year due to flooding and in 25 years’ time it's predicted a quarter of club grounds will flood every year.

None of us are perfect but by coming together and acting, we can create real change to protect our world and our sport.

To see how our players are getting involved, watch the video below – Saints Performance Chef, Ayrton Proctor teaches First Team players Rosie Parnell and Izzy Milne how to make vegan Tahini cauliflower steaks. The pressure is then on as they go head to head, making the dish themselves for Head of Women’s and Girls Football, Marieanne Spacey-Cale.

In need of some ideas as to how you can help protect the planet on a matchday? Check out our handy hints and tips below:

  • Step in the right direction - walk to our next match with other Saints fans

  • Join the refill revolution – swap to a reusable water bottle

  • Dial up the layers – wear our Saints gear to reduce the central heating at home

  • Take a stand for nature - become a #LitterHero to help the biodiversity in our area
