Manchester City Under-16s vs Southampton Football Club Under-16s
Saints’ girl’s under-16s academy team succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City at Wide Lane.
Saints had an early chance from a free kick after City’s number 3 was judged to have handled the ball, and The Reds’ number 6 drove her shot underneath the jumping wall, but a defender was alert on the goal line to lash the ball clear.
The visitors’ number 2 then beat a defender on the right wing and her cross found number 10, but the ball bounced off her thigh and wide of the post, before Saints’ goalkeeper was quick off her line to deny number 9 a chance just moments later.
City almost snatched the lead after 10 minutes when number 9 nicked the ball from the Southampton ‘keeper and played the ball to number 7, who couldn’t generate enough power on her first-time effort which allowed the ‘keeper to scamper back and claim.
It was just a minute later though when Saints did go behind. City’s number 9 slotted into the bottom left corner of goal having been played through by number 10 after they had pressed high up the pitch.
And the lead was almost doubled immediately after City’s 2 got away down the right once more, but her delivery could only be headed wide by number 8.
It was the 21st minute when it did become 2-0; some miscommunication in The Saints’ defence allowed City’s 10 to latch onto the loose ball and fire past the goalkeeper to double the Sky Blues’ lead.
The visitors continued their barrage, and came close to bagging a third when number 8’s corner was met on the volley by number 5, but her effort cannoned off a defender’s head and then off the right post.
It became damage limitation for The Saints in the second half, and they did keep City at bay to close out the game at 2-0.
