Stephens back in training
Jack Stephens has resumed team training at Staplewood Campus following a two-month layoff with a knee injury.
The defender limped out of Southampton’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City back in September having suffered tendon damage, but has successfully completed a week’s training ahead of Saturday’s trip to Liverpool.
Commenting on Stephens’s return, Hasenhüttl said: “Jack is back in training which is the first week in a long time.
“This is good for him, good for us and if he is ready for the weekend I’m not sure, but it’s good that he’s back.
“In the moment it’s quite tough to get into the 18 [matchday squad] as we have a lot of alternatives.
“After one week training, coming immediately back it takes a little bit [of time].
“I try to give them longer on the pitch to come back as we were still taking care with him this week. There’s no rush and no hurry.”
Elsewhere, Nathan Redmond is back in contention having missed the trip to Norwich following the birth of his son, while Moussa Djenepo has recovered from a slight knock.
However, Stuart Armstrong will be absent at Anfield, the boss confirmed.
“Stu is out with a calf injury and Moussa is back in training and ready.”
