Nathan Tella expressed just how much he's enjoying playing his part in Ralph Hasenhüttl's first-team setup ahead of the 2021/22 season, following a positive start to his pre-season campaign by notching a brace of assists against Cardiff City.

The young forward was introduced midway through the second period during Saints' meeting with the Bluebirds on Tuesday evening, making a near-instant impact as he twice sought out teammate Chè Adams, who applied two neat finishes.

Speaking about his growing influence and the desire to etch his name on the scoresheet more often, he said: "I enjoyed it a lot. Second game back and I felt good. Nice to play in front of fans again.

"I'm happy that we were able to get the result and get a win. That's credit to all of the squad, because everyone took the off season very seriously. Everyone came back in good shape. That's shown today.

"We're fit and fresh. We're ready to go out and play. I remember last season, talking to Chè. I'm always thinking about what I can do to help others on the pitch.

"Obviously tonight I was able to provide that for Chè with two good passes, and he did the rest. It's just nice to play with him. I just want to keep assisting, but also score goals myself.

"Overall I'm happy with how the game went. All pre-season periods are big for me, it's a chance to show how seriously you want to take the season ahead. It's competition and we all want to play, which will bring the best out of all the forwards."
