Ralph Hasenhüttl wants his Southampton side to show Cardiff how much they have developed as a team since they last met, as they prepare to host the Bluebirds in a big Premier League clash this Saturday.

The Welsh club were the opponents for Hasenhüttl's first game in charge, with Saints falling to a 1-0 defeat in a scrappy contest away from home.

Nine weeks on and the teams are preparing to go head-to-head again, this time at St Mary's, as both sides look for what would be a precious three points in the fight to retain top-flight status.

Saints' form has improved significantly since that early December clash, picking up 15 points in that time, while they are currently enjoying a five-match unbeaten run in the league.

For Hasenhüttl, the game represents a chance for his side to show how far they have come in a short period.

"I know that it is a big opportunity to make a big step," he said. "We lost the first game against them 1-0 – I don't know if we were the worse team or if they were the better team, but we want to show ourselves that we are one step further in our development, so let us have a look and see if we can get a different result.

"We are playing a different shape and there are a lot of different players now in the first XI. We have made a big change in our game and the way we want to play football.

"In the last two months we have changed a lot – we have taken 15 points since then, which we had to because we are still in a lot of trouble, and that shows us how important it is in this part of the season to take points consistently."
