Southampton Under-18s bounced back from their 5-1 defeat at Aston Villa last week with an impressive display at home to see off their Norwich counterparts in the Under-18 Premier League.

Paul Hardyman’s side triumphed 4-1 at Staplewood Campus, with goals coming from Will Ferry, Enzo Robise, Taymar Fleary and Christian Norton.

Saints started well and were in front in the 16th minute, as Caleb Watts delivered a driven pass out Will Ferry on the right, and he exploded past full-back Atli Barkarson and drove into the area.

Sam Blair kept out Ferry’s initial shot, but the ball rebounded straight back to him and he was able to lift it over the Norwich keeper for the opener.

From there, Saints went in search for a second.

Christian Norton almost got it in the 19th minute, latching onto Alexandre Jankewitz’s beautiful through pass, only for his left-footed shot across goal to go just wide of the far post.

In the 26th minute, Norton was then denied by a fine Blair save, as he sprung to his left to tip away the Saints striker’s shot from 18 yards, after Ferry had laid Robise’s square ball into his path.

Norwich then sparked into life, with Jack Bycroft making a wonderful save with his left foot after Anthonious Berkerley’s low cross had found Isak Thorvarldsson just a few yards out.

But he could not keep out Thorvarldsson’s next close-range effort, in the 35th minute, as Barkarson’s cross from the left was nodded back into the striker’s path by Ethan Vaughan.

Parity lasted just four minutes, though, as Saints scored a superb goal off the back of a slick move down the right.

Ferry played a glorious ball with the outside of his foot to release Taymar Fleary down the wing, and he looked up before sending in a wicked low cross that found the run of Robise, who swept home first time with his right foot.

Either side of half-time, only the heroics of Blair kept Saints’ lead at one, as the Norwich keeper produced two stunning fingertip stops to divert low shots bound for the far corner just wide, first from Robise and then, eight minutes into the second half, from Ferry.

When he was beaten for the third time, in the 56th minute, there was a touch of good fortune about it – although it was nothing less than Saints deserved.

Ferry fed the ball into Fleary just inside the right edge of the area and took a touch before digging out a cross that sliced and looped up into the air, over the head of Blair, who got fingertips to it, but couldn’t prevent it dropping into the net just inside the far post for 3-1.

On the hour mark, Norton had a goal chalked off for offside, as Robise turned Ferry’s delivery back across goal for him to turn home.

Saints were comfortable, although they did survive one big scare with slightly more than ten minutes left on the clock, as the visitors struck the inside of the post from a scramble that ensued from a poorly-cleared corner.

But they removed any doubt about the outcome in the 82nd minute, as second-half substitute Kayne Ramsay swung over a cross that picked out Norton at the back post, with the striker coolly slotting in a first-time effort for Saints’ fourth of the afternoon.
