Radhi Jaïdi felt Marcus Barnes’s third goal in as many games was the least his side deserved after Southampton Under-23s chalked up a third straight victory in Premier League 2.

Despite controlling the game throughout, Saints would have to wait until Barnes headed home Will Smallbone’s corner on the hour to make the breakthrough.

It was a second successive three-point haul for the youngsters at St Mary’s, where Jaïdi’s side began their winning run against Wolves a fortnight ago.

“I felt we dominated the game, especially in the first half, and the boys applied everything we asked them to do,” the boss enthused.

“We passed the ball quicker and exploited the wide areas, which is something we prepared for against West Brom, but it was just that last decision, last shot or finishing technique that didn’t work for us today – that’s something we need to work on more.

“We played at home at St Mary’s, and we want to stay on top of the teams we’re playing against, to control the game and keep the pressure on them.

“It’s always special to play at St Mary’s and to replicate the first-team environment. With a bit more of a crowd, it would make it more realistic for our boys.”

Having left it late in a five-goal thriller against Wolves, the Under-23s have now kept back-to-back clean sheets, and restricted West Brom to very few sights of goal.

“I think what makes it more special is the clean sheets,” added Jaïdi, a formidable defender in his playing days.

“The boys are working really hard off the ball – we try to put pressure on the other team, winning the first and second balls.

“Overall, it’s really positive and a big well done to my boys."
