Southampton Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi has called upon his side to maintain their performance levels ahead of a Premier League 2 trip to Newcastle United.

Saints youngsters return to league action following a 2-0 success away at Colchester United in the Checkatrade Trophy.

And they will be hoping an unbeaten start to the season can continue when they head to the North East.

“We’ve had a really good start. We’ve tried to keep the level consistently high. It’s going to be a long trip to Newcastle but we’re ready and we’ve prepared really well,” Jaïdi said.

“It was a great performance against Colchester and the boys applied themselves and managed the game well. We need to keep that performance, the game management and understanding the game situations to take it into the Premier League now.

“It’s totally different and a different type of team we’re playing against. Newcastle are a team who like to try and play out from the back. They try to get the ball into wide areas to create crossing opportunities.

“But we have more leaders in the team, more players who can take the responsibilities and pass that on to the others.”
