Hughes wants front foot football

Southampton boss Mark Hughes wants his side to take the attacking intent they showed under his stewardship into the new campaign.

Hughes placed emphasis on his team taking the game to the opposition and being brave on the ball to try and get the results they needed.

And he says that Saints fans can expect that to continue after he was appointed on a three-year deal last month.

“That’s how I want my teams to play. I’ve always wanted my teams to be on the front foot and be able to dictate to the opposition they’re up against irrespective of what level people perceive them to be,” Hughes said.

“I always think you can affect the opposition if you’re positive in what you’re trying to do and we’ll make sure we get good fundamentals right through the team. A lot of that is already in place.

“Last year the main thing that was lacking was just the confidence which ebbs away if you’re not winning football matches.

“That started to return and we started to understand what we needed to do to win Premier League games again.

“That mindset and thought process is already there and we will benefit from it next season.”
