Saints defensive duo set for World Cup warm-up matches

By SFC Media Fri 08 Jun International

Saints defensive duo Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek are set for international tonight as they continue their build-up to the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.

The Samurai Blue face Switzerland in Lugano (6pm BST), looking to bounce back after they suffered a 2-0 defeat in their last friendly contest against Ghana at the Yokohama Stadium.

Opponents Switzerland earned a 1-1 draw with Spain in their last contest, with Ricardo Rodriguez profiting from a rare David de Gea error to cancel out Alvaro Odriozola’s volley.

Japan will complete their preparations against Paraguay on Tuesday 12th June, before their World Cup Group H opener against Colombia seven days later in Saransk.

Elsewhere, Bednarek will hope to be involved as Poland take on Chile in the first of two warm-up games (7.45pm BST).

Adam Nawałka’s side were 3-2 victors over South Korea in their last outing back in March and will face a tough test against La Roja, who defeated Dušan Tadić’s Serbia earlier this month.

Bendarek and co will then fine tune preparations for their opening World Cup game against Senegal on Tuesday 19th June with a game against Lithuania.
