Radhi Jaïdi has prioritised improvement in the final third as the Under-23s squad face a long trip north to league leaders Middlesborough this weekend.
After a disappointing showing against Fulham last time out, Southampton's youngsters have the chance to respond in North Yorkshire on Sunday, but face a side who have only lost once in this year's Premier League 2 competition.
"The main thing is a positive reaction," Jaïdi reiterated. "We always look for the players who show a bit of resilience and a good attitude to overcome failure.
"From a positive point of view, we created a lot of entries [against Fulham] and a lot of chances, but we didn't score as many. This is something we must keep working on. Hopefully the boys will show more quality and focus up front tomorrow.
"We need concentration and commitment from players. As coaches we keep working on that."
Speaking directly about Sunday's opposition, Jaïdi added: "Middlesborough have a core group of players, the same players who began the season, they all know one another. It is a tough test, especially playing away.
"It will be physical at times. But it is about how we're going to impose ourselves during the game, players who are willing to address things."
