Virgil van Dijk played the full 90 minutes as Netherlands overcame Scotland by a solitary goal in a friendly tonight.

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay struck the winner five minutes before half-time in Aberdeen.

Both nations finished third in their respective World Cup qualifying groups, missing out on a place in this month’s play-offs to reach the final tournament in Russia.

Van Dijk’s Southampton teammate Wesley Hoedt was also called up by Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, but withdrew from the squad due to injury.

Netherlands return to action when they face Romania in another friendly, in Bucharest, next Tuesday.
