Steven Davis was denied a positive result on his landmark 100th cap as Northern Ireland fell to a 1-0 defeat against Switzerland in the first leg of their World Cup qualification play-off.

A tense game hung in the balance until Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan awarded a controversial penalty in favour of the visitors in the 58th minute at Windsor Park.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s volley appeared to be blocked fairly by Corry Evans, who was harshly penalised for handball at point-blank range.

Up stepped Ricardo Rodriguez to convert the spot-kick, giving the Swiss a vital lead going into Sunday’s second leg in Basel.

Josh Magennis came closest for Northern Ireland, but headed wide from Chris Brunt’s free kick as the hosts chased an equaliser.

Davis will hope for a dramatic turnaround when the two teams meet again, as Northern Ireland strive to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
