Yan Valery believes togetherness will be key when Southampton pit their wits against Northampton in the Checkatrade Trophy tonight.

Valery played in the 1-0 win at Cambridge that means the young Saints will progress from Group H with victory at Sixfields tonight.

The Frenchman says his teammates will take confidence from the way they dealt with Cambridge’s physical threat.

“We have to be really concentrated for 90 minutes,” Valery said.

“We know that we are playing against men, so we have to be ready for the physical battle.

“When we played against Cambridge, we had to stay focused even when we were winning 1-0, because they battled for the whole 90 minutes against us.

“We’ve seen that when we play together, when the communication is right and when we help each other, we can beat senior teams.

“Even if we have a lot of young players, including some under-18s, we can still win against them.”
