A number of young Southampton players enjoyed a day to remember on the international scene on Tuesday.
Jonathan Afolabi, Thomas O’Connor and Michael Obafemi were part of the Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad that qualified for the UEFA European Championship Elite Round, thanks to a 2-1 win over Serbia, in Waterford.
Afolabi, who scored twice in the 5-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday, started alongside O’Connor, while Obafemi was on the bench, as Ireland topped their group to advance to the elite stage as one of the top seeds.
The Saints trio will now hope that they can help their country go on to qualify for the 2019 finals.
It was also an afternoon to remember for another Southampton Under-18s player, as Sean Brennan scored for the Republic of Ireland Under-17s team in their 6-0 win over Azerbaijan in UEFA European Championship qualifying.
Brennan’s Saints teammate, Kameron Ledwidge also started for the Irish in their comprehensive victory.
Also in action in Under-17 European Championship qualifying was Under-16s squad member Callum Watts.
He started for Wales, who produced a good performance but were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Hungary.
