Virgil van Dijk featured for the full 90 minutes as Netherlands struck late to defeat Belarus 3-1 on Saturday night.
A thumping 8-0 win for qualification rivals Sweden over Luxembourg earlier in the evening all but extinguished the Dutch’s chances of reaching the World Cup in Russia next summer, whose win in Minsk at least keeps their mathematical chances alive until the final matchday.
Davy Propper put the visitors in front midway through the first half only for Belarus to equalise thanks to Maxsim Valadsko after the break. A late Arjen Robben penalty and a stoppage-time effort from Memphis Depay saw van Dijk’s side edge through.
Saints’ Wesley Hoedt was an unused substitute.
The Oranje now host Sweden in Amsterdam on Tuesday night requiring a 12-goal swing to leapfrog them into second place.
