Maya Yoshida captained Japan as they secured a 2-1 home friendly win over New Zealand today.

The Saints defender wore the armband for his country, at Toyota Stadium, playing the full 90 minutes.

Yuya Ōsako’s penalty five minutes after half-time set Japan on the way and, although Chris Wood equalised for the visitors shortly afterwards, the hosts took the victory thanks to Shu Kurata’s goal two minutes from time.

Japan, who have already qualified for the 2018 World Cup finals, will continue their preparations for next summer’s tournament on Tuesday, when they host Haiti, in Yokohama, in another friendly match.
