Wesley Hoedt was left disappointed with the way in which his Southampton debut played out against Watford.
The Dutch defender started alongside Jack Stephens for the game at St Mary’s, where two long-range strikes from Abdoulaye Doucouré and Daryl Janmaat earned the visitors all three points.
“Unfortunately it was a bad start for all of us,” started Hoedt.
“I think we lost too many second balls. At that point they won the game and I think that is where it went wrong for us.
“We didn’t concede that much, only two shots on goal, but we need to do much better and improve. That’s the only thing we can do now. Stick together and improve.”
Whilst Hoedt was pleased to get his Saints career underway and admitted he has settled into the squad well, he also stressed the importance of getting back to winning ways.
“I think everybody needs to look in the mirror today,” he continued.
“Everybody needs to see what they did wrong and see where they can improve, that’s the most important thing.
“Then on Monday as a group we need to speak about it and keep moving forward and improving together.”
