Yoshida and Japan suffer defeat

Maya Yoshida and Japan suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Saudi Arabia in their final Group B World Cup qualifying fixture.

Al-Ittihad winger Fahad Al Muwallad struck on 63 minutes after being introduced as a half-time substitute to ensure victory for the hosts in Jeddah.

Despite the defeat, Yoshida and Japan still finish top of Group B, having already confirmed their place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The result did, however, see Saudi Arabia secure second spot in the group and, subsequently, their place at the World Cup.

Australia, who occupied second place ahead of this game, dropped down to third on goal difference and will now face Syria in a play-off match.
