Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand played the full game and helped England to keep up their lead at the top of Group F in World Cup qualifying, with a 2-1 success over Slovakia at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate’s men were behind after just three minutes when Stanislav Lobotska capitalised on an error by Marcus Rashford to finish past Joe Hart.

Slovakia looked the dominant side after that, but Eric Dier restored parity when he swept home Rashford’s corner.

Shortly before half-time, Bertrand went close when he stung the gloves of Martin Dubravka with a driven shot from the edge of the area.

After the interval, England upped the ante and got their reward on 59 minutes when Rashford picked up Jordan Henderson’s pass, before dispatching a super effort across goal and into the far corner.
