After going all the way to Wembley last season, Southampton’s Carabao Cup campaign came to an early end this term, as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Wolves in the second round.

Danny Batth’s second-half header and Donovan Wilson's late strike put a swift end to hopes of reaching the final of the competition in successive campaigns, as Nuno Espírito Santo’s well-organised Championship side progressed.

Mauricio Pellegrino made six changes from the side that beat West Ham 3-2 at the weekend, as Cédric, Ryan Bertrand, Steven Davis, Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini dropped to the bench, while Mario Lemina was rested completely.

In came Jérémy Pied, Sam McQueen, James Ward-Prowse, Sofiane Boufal, Charlie Austin and Jan Bednarek, with the Polish defender making his debut for the club, following his summer arrival from Lech Poznań.

It all meant a change in system for Saints boss Pellegrino, who started with three at the back for the first time.

Before the action got under way, there was a touching minute’s applause in memory of Southampton’s Senior Recruitment Officer, Bill Green, who sadly passed away earlier this week, following a short illness.

The early stages of the game offered little in the way of clear-cut openings, although Nouha Dicko did threaten in the opening minutes for the visitors, while Maya Yoshida headed wide from a Ward-Prowse corner.

Saints’ first real effort of note came in the 24th minute, as Boufal cut onto his right foot on the corner of the area and fired in a shot that Wolves keeper Will Norris held onto.

The hosts has an even better opportunity a minute later, as Pied broke free down the inside-right, but, under pressure from behind, he dragged his shot across goal and wide of the far post.

Moments later, Austin went into the book, catching Norris as he slid in to make an attempt at blocking the keeper’s clearance.

Saints earned a good opportunity as the clock ticked past 36 minutes, as Ward-Prowse swung in a free-kick from deep, picking out Bednarek, but he didn’t get anywhere near enough on his header to trouble Norris.

Bednarek made a far better connection from another Ward-Prowse delivery three minutes later, but Norris was again equal, this time with a spectacular save as he flung himself to his left.

The Wolves stopper then got the slightest of touches to Pied’s fierce strike across goal, before Dušan Tadić shot wide from a good position inside the area.

The last action of note in the first half saw Ben Marshall booked for a foul on Pied, before Oriol Romeu saw yellow for bringing down Ivan Cavalero, as the sides went in level at the interval.

After a bit of a burst to life at the end of the opening 45 minutes, the game slipped back into a lull as the second half got under way.

In fact, there were no chances for either side to speak of until Wolves found the breakthrough in the 67th minute, with Danny Batth climbing highest to meet a corner and bounce a header into the back of the net.

It prompted Pellegrino into his first change of the night, as Bednarek was withdrawn in favour of Redmond, with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Two more changes quickly followed, as Gabbiadini replaced Boufal and Shane Long came on for Tadić.

Despite the positive changes, it was Wolves who found the next goal, sealing the game in the 87th minute, as substitute Wilson was played in down the inside-left and finished past Fraser Forster.
