Having penned his new five-year deal, Matt Targett has now marked out his ambitions for the coming campaign.

The 21-year-old missed a large part of last season due to a hamstring injury, but believes he has returned from that injury a better player.

“I missed a lot of games last season,” he starts.

“But hopefully now I can stay injury free and get out on that pitch as much as possible. Hopefully I can play in the left-back spot and play as many games as possible.

“Behind the scenes I have done a lot of work with Kev the physio and Bill Styles the fitness coach. They both work really well together and they have made me come back a better player.”

The early signs certainly look good for the Academy graduate, who came off the bench in the friendly against Saint-Étienne to set up the two opening goals.

And Targett is hopeful that he can continue to impress new boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

“When you are on the pitch you want to give a good impression to the new manager, so to come on and make the impact I did is only a positive thing,” he continued.

“From day one he has made it clear to me how he wants me to play with his philosophy and style of play. That was important because I came back a bit later.

“So as a player I am excited to see what is going to happen. Training has been very good and the coaching staff and the manger have been fantastic, so it is going to be a positive season hopefully.”
