Ward-Prowse and Redmond feature in Sweden draw

England under-21s kicked off the U21 European Championships with a 0-0 draw against Sweden.

Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse captained the Young Lions, with both him and Nathan Redmond completing the full 90 minutes.

With Jack Stephens and Matt Targett watching on from the sidelines, Ward-Prowse came close to opening the scoring when he saw his excellent free-kick turned behind by Sweden goalkeeper Anton Cajtoft.

Aidy Boothroyd’s men were thankful to their own stopper though late on, after Ben Chillwell brought down Linus Wahlqvist in the box.

Wahlqvist dusted himself down to take the penalty, but he was thwarted by Everton’s club-record signing Jordan Pickford as he stuck out an arm to preserve a point.

They will now turn their attentions to their next game against Slovakia in Group A on Monday 19th June (5pm BST).
