Claude Puel believes the Southampton squad fully deserved their 2-1 victory away at Middlesbrough.
Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond fired Saints ahead before they were then forced to withstand a late surge of pressure following Patrick Bamford’s header.
“It’s a good result,” Puel started.
“I think we can finish the game with the penalty and then after that it was a bit difficult because the other players perhaps believed it wasn’t finished.
“We lost, perhaps, a bit of the concentration in our game so it was difficult with the long play that we faced after that.
“But it was important to take the three points for the squad because it is a good reward for all of the players.”
Puel made seven changes to the side that suffered midweek defeat against Arsenal at St Mary’s.
And he was delighted with the performances he saw from players that have not featured so heavily this season.
“I am happy with the players that haven’t had a lot of game time over the last few weeks,” he continued.
“Today allowed them to show their qualities and let them play in a serious game with good consideration and focus.
“This is very interesting for them and for the team. I was confident with all of these players because I have seen on the training ground the work they can do.”
