Oriol Romeu was unable to hide his delight after picking up the two main awards at Southampton’s Player Awards evening.
The Spanish midfielder was named player of the season by both Saints fans and his teammates following a superb Premier League campaign.
“It has been an amazing season, I have enjoyed it a lot,” Romeu explained.
“I’ve felt everyone’s support and need to thank my teammates for valuing the work I have done since I cam here. I couldn’t be any happier.
“Also the fans as well because their support gives you another strength to carry on and fight for every single ball. I need to say thank you to the fans because without them sometimes it would be much harder.”
Romeu earmarked the EFL Cup run as his personal highlight of the season, including both the late win at Liverpool and the final itself.
“Playing at Wembley and St Mary’s has been amazing this season,” he continued.
“It was an unreal atmosphere at Wembley and we will never forget that day. We couldn’t get the title but we took many things from that day – it was amazing.
“Also Longy’s goal at Anfield. That was one my happiest moments as a footballer – seeing him put the ball in the back of the net and then all the fans and players celebrating getting to Wembley. It was amazing.”
