Claude Puel was pleased with his side's performance at Chelsea, but conceded they were not as clinical as their opponents in either box.
Saints were beaten 4-2 by the Premier League leaders at Stamford Bridge, despite producing plenty of positive moments during the match.
Reflecting on the result, Puel said: "I think it was a good performance on the pitch, but without the good result, and without being clinical enough in both the boxes, offensively and defensively.
"We conceded goals at bad moments – five minutes into the first half, then the second right at the end, and the third just at the beginning of the second half.
"It's a shame, because the quality we showed and the opportunities we created, we produced a good game against a great team, but tonight I think the details made the difference – defending better on free-kicks, for example, and two great players like Diego Costa and Eden Hazard helped make the difference.
"It's a shame, because it was better than against Manchester City. I was more satisfied with the level of our game.
