Southampton Under-18s are preparing to face unfamiliar foe when they take on Newcastle United at Staplewood tomorrow.

The Magpies visit in the play-off section of the Under-18 Premier League table, and it will be the first time the two sides have met this season.

“I think it’s a good challenge,” explained Fleming.

“They play a little bit of a different way, as well. We’ve had a look at them and if they play as they have in the last few games it will be a slightly different test.

“It’s good to play against teams that you haven’t faced before though, because the lads will be coming against other players that they don’t know that much about.”

One of Fleming’s players, Jake Vokins, recently put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the club.

The left back signed on the day of his 17th birthday, and Fleming believes it is nothing less than he deserved.

“He’s been tremendous,” continued the manager.

“Last December we had a couple of injuries and didn’t have a left back for our FA Youth Cup game - he was playing left wing for the under-16s at the time and came in did great.

“He was probably one of the better players on the pitch that night and it’s all gone from there. Within a few games he was with our under-23s and has forced his way into the England set-up. Now he’s got his just rewards.”
