Davis captains Irish to win

Southampton club captain Steven Davis skippered Northern Ireland to a 2-0 home win over Norway in World Cup qualifying.

After making the European Championship finals for the first time last summer, Michael O'Neill's side are now looking to reach a first World Cup since 1986.

They boosted their chances with the win over Norway, in Belfast, with the result taking their total to ten points from five games, putting them second in Group C, behind Germany, at the halfway stage of qualifying for the 2018 finals, in Russia.

The Irish did the damage in the first half, as Jamie Ward gave them a perfect start, scoring inside two minutes.

His effort was then followed up by Conor Washington half-an-hour later.

Northern Ireland had other opportunities to extend their lead, but the two goals proved enough, as they ran out comfortable victors.
