Southampton 4-3 AFC Bournemouth

In a year where Saints would reclaim their place in Division Two, they played out a seven-goal thriller at The Dell.

Clifton nonchalantly side-footed the ball home from Terry Paine’s inch-perfect pass after 15 minutes, before Bumstead’s deflected shot levelled things at 1-1.

Saints were pegged back again after O’Brien’s effort was cancelled out by Southren, but took control as Clifton went forward to nod home a Sydenham corner.

And Reeves then fired home to make it 4-2, before a late 88th minute penalty was awarded to the visitors after O’Brien upended Evans to bring an absorbing encounter to a close.

Rickie Lambert’s double from the penalty spot secured victory over AFC Bournemouth at St Mary’s, in what was the first league meeting for 50 years.

After Rhoys Wiggins handled inside the area, Lambert smashed the resulting spot kick past Shwan Jalal.

10 minutes into the second-half, Saints had another penalty awarded when Marvin Bartley brought down Morgan Schneiderlin and Lambert made no mistake.

The Cherries also saw Adam Smith sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

Southampton 2-0 AFC Bournemouth

A first top-flight meeting between the two sides, Southampton’s dominant first-half display helped them to another 2-0 success against their South Coast neighbours.

It took until just after the half hour mark to break the resistance of Eddie Howe’s men, when Ryan Bertrand’s cross was volleyed home by Steven Davis from close range.

Within five minutes, the lead was doubled when Graziano Pelle headed in Dušan Tadić’s inch-perfect cross for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Victor Wanyama saw red on 78 minutes after bringing down Lee Tomlin, but the visitors couldn’t find a way back.

AFC Bournemouth 1-3 Southampton

Jay Rodriguez was in clinical mood when Saints met Bournemouth in December. Nathan Ake’s diving header had put the Cherries in front after six minutes before Claude Puel’s men rallied.

Ryan Bertrand’s run and superb finish from a tight angle levelled things soon after.

The introduction of Steven Davis at the interval proved a masterstroke as he laid on the first for Rodriguez, cutting the ball back from the byline for a simple finish.

But what followed next from the former Burnley man was something far from routine. Rodriguez turned on the edge of the box and volleyed a breath-taking effort beyond the grasp of Boruc.

Saints responded to an early Lauri Dalla Valle to record a win over Bournemouth in 2011.

Lee Barnard levelled on 11 minutes when he converted Rickie Lambert’s cross with his head, before Dean Hammond completed the turnaround.

Rickie Lambert’s stunning free-kick extended the advantage and substitute Oscar Gobern saw red in injury time after a rash challenge on Adam Smith.
