Southampton defender Jason McCarthy was unable to prevent loan club Walsall falling to defeat at home to Fleetwood last night.

Cian Bolger’s first-half header gave the promotion-chasing visitors an early lead after just 20 minutes at Bescot.

Both Ben Davies and Ashley Hunter were then denied by the woodwork as they looked to double the Cod Army’s advantage.

In a game of few chances for Walsall Erhun Oztumer did have a late opportunity to equalise, but his curling free-kick fell wide of the post.

The defeat ends a six-game winning run at home for the Saddlers and ensures they remain five points adrift of the play-off places in 9th.

Elsewhere, Sam Gallagher's loan club Blackburn Rovers earned a valuable 2-2 draw away to Fulham, though the young striker missed out through injury.
