Southampton defender Jason McCarthy helped keep Walsall within touching distance of the League One play-off places with a victory over Chesterfield.
The Saddlers completed a confident 1-0 win over Gary Caldwell’s men at Bescot Stadium, as Scott Laird bundled in from close range on 53 minutes to take all three points.
Walsall then had the opportunity to double the score line before full time, but Kieron Morris’ 20-yard strike was well stopped by Thorsten Stuckmann in the Spirates goal.
The victory is Walsall's sixth consecutive at home as they move up to 8th in League One - just six points short of the play-off places.
Elsewhere, Sam Gallagher’s Blackburn netted late at home to ensure a share of the points against Cardiff.
Gallagher played an hour at Ewood Park and was unlucky not to put the hosts ahead as his early strike bounced clear off the crossbar.
Kenneth Zohore then struck on 38 minutes to give Cardiff the lead, which they held on to right until the closing minutes of the match.
And with 90 minutes on the clock, Derrick Williams pulled the ball down in the penalty area and rifled in an equaliser to earn Rovers a valuable point.
The draw keeps Blackburn two points clear of the Championship drop zone with nine games still to play.
