A Callum Slattery brace and goals from Will Smallbone and Tyreke Johnson saw Southampton Under-18s come out on top in a six-goal thriller in Leicester.

Saints marched to an early lead in the Under-18 Premier League encounter, and had hit three without reply before 15 minutes had been played.

The opener came on just six minutes after Slattery was felled on the edge of the area. Smallbone then lined up the resulting free-kick and dispatched it past Max Bramley with a fine low drive.

Slattery had the ball in the net once again just five minutes later, as his deflected shot wrong-footed Bramley and snuck in at the Leicester goalkeeper's near post.

Sensing blood Saints continued to press for a third, and it didn't take long until they had it. Siph Mdlalose fired in a fantastic cross from the right which Johnson headed in at the near post to make it 3-0.

The hosts did have chances to reduce the deficit in the first half. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall almost responded immediately, but his attempt was deflected wide before Kairo Arolott-Edwards then dragged a strike past the far post.

A faultless first-half display was then dealt its only negative in the closing stages, as Siph Mdlalose suffered injury and was replaced by Harlem Hale.

The Saints youngsters celebrate Tyreke Johnson netting their third of the afternoon.

Saints soon made it four after the break. Jamie Bradley-Green saw his attempt from a corner parried, but Slattery reacted first in the penalty area and slotted in from close range to double his personal tally.

Substitute Hale then had the chance to make it five on the hour mark. A swift counter attack saw the winger fly through and cut back before striking, but his deflected strike bounced clear off the Leicester crossbar.

Despite the deficit, the hosts were still determined to find a way back into the match. And they did on 62 minutes when Arlott-Edwards found space on the edge of the area and struck in off Adam Parkes' far post to make it 4-1.

Arlott-Edwards then netted his second of the afternoon on 80 minutes. Sneaking in behind the Saints backline he chipped over Parkes to spark hopes of a potential late comeback.

The Saints youngsters were then forced to withstand a barrage of late corners, one of which bounced clear off Parkes' crossbar, but despite the hosts' best efforts, they held firm to pick up three well deserved points.
