Southampton captain Steven Davis praised the character of the side, after they battled back before a disappointing end to the EFL Cup final against Manchester United.
Manolo Gabbiadini had a goal wrongly disallowed in the first-half, before Saints drew upon their spirit to fight back to 2-2 only to have their hearts broken by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Davis said: “It just wasn’t to be our day. The disallowed goal could have been a big turning point in the game.
“Then we go 2-0 down and get a reaction, which showed great character and spirit from the team.
“We kept going until the final whistle, we gave it our all and on the day it just wasn’t to be but I thought we deserved more than what we got.
“They were very clinical with the chances they got today and we showed great spirit to get it back to 2-2 and at that point maybe you think you’re going to go on and win it.
“They were the more clinical side on the day but it’s a hard one to take.”
