Vokins makes England Under-17s debut

Southampton youngster Jake Vokins believes the pride he felt making his England Under-17s debut will live long in the memory.

The 16-year-old was gifted a starting berth at left back for the opening fixture of the Algarve Tournament against hosts Portugal.

And despite falling to a 1-0 defeat, Vokins was delighted to be involved for the full match and make his international bow.

“I think I’ll definitely look back on this moment as a real highlight,” he explained.

“The feeling when I put on that shirt was incredible. I just want to keep doing it, progressing and getting more caps.

“My parents were both out here to watch and they were very proud and happy, apparently they were a little bit emotional when I was walking out!"

Vokins has previously been involved with the England Under-15s set-up, but the call to the Algarve Tournament was his first for the Under-17s.

“Obviously I was a bit nervous coming out here,” he admits.

“This group have all been together before, so I just wanted to get to know everyone and settle in, really.

"We only had two training sessions before the game, so I just wanted to show what I can do and impress - I felt like I did that, so I am very happy.”
