Southampton youngster Thomas O’Connor has been called into the Republic of Ireland Under-19s side for an invitational tournament in La Manga.

The 17-year-old midfielder has today flown out to meet up with the squad, who play their first game in the competition against Norway tomorrow.

Ireland then face ties against Portugal and Slovakia before the tournament concludes, as they prepare for next month’s UEFA Under-19 Championships Elite qualifying rounds.

O’Connor has enjoyed a successful campaign with Saints so far and, despite being a second-year scholar, has already made 21 starts for Radhi Jaïdi’s Under-23s side.

“It's good news for Tom”, commented Jaïdi.

"It's important and it is a result of the hard work he has been putting in since the start of the season.

"Obviously he has been continually playing with us and he has been learning and improving, so congratulations to him. Hopefully he will continue to work and push higher."
