Jack Stephens is confident Southampton can turn their form around in the Premier League, starting with a result against West Ham on Saturday.

A 3-0 success against Leicester City at St Mary’s was followed up by a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City, with Claude Puel’s men seeking the consistency that will enable them to climb into the upper echolons of the table.

And Stephens believes that they have the quality to try and get back into the Europa League spots they desire to be in.

He said: “Every team throughout the season has a slump in form. West Ham had a difficult start and we went to there place and took full advantage with a great result.

“They’ve hit a bit of form so it will be a difficult game, they’re going to be full of confidence.

“But we had a great against Leicester and Liverpool recently so we’re hoping we can get the right result.

“We’re quite comfortable at the moment but we want to push on to the Europa League places again.

“We finished there last year and unfortunately got knocked out in the group stage. We want to be back in that competition for next year.”

In the absence of Virgil van Dijk, Stephens has partnered Maya Yoshida in central defence, something which he has relished the responsibility of.

“I’ve loved every minute of it. I want to play football and be in this starting team. I’ve worked really hard for it and it’s been difficult because everyone has been playing so well.

“It’s important to be confident in your ability and you will eventually get your chance if you keep doing the right things and stay positive.
