Southampton fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Swansea City, as the hosts made it three wins out of four under the stewardship of Paul Clement.

Alfie Mawson opened the scoring for the hosts when he powered home a header from Gylfi Sigurdsson's corner, before Shane Long levelled things when he converted Ryan Bertrand's low cross after the interval.

But Gylfi Sigurdsson's 70th minute strike proved the difference as a break at pace saw debutant Luciano Narsingh pick out his run, before the Icelandic international kept his cool to curl his shot beyond the grasp of the impressive Fraser Forster.

Claude Puel made four changes from the last Premier League outing against Leicester City, with Steven Davis, Jordy Clasie, Jack Stephens and Long coming in, while there was a place on the bench for Sofiane Boufal after his injury lay-off.

Opposite number Paul Clement named the same side that recorded an impressive 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, as Tom Carroll and Martin Olsson made home debuts.

The visitors enjoyed more of the ball in the early exchanges, as Long raced on to an incisive Dušan Tadić pass before shooting wide from the angle.

It was looking like a half bereft of clear-cut openings, before Cédric made a superb block to deny Sigurdsson after a cross fell kindly to him in the area, and the Icelandic international forced Forster into a comfortable save.

The hosts soon up ante and Leroy Fer’s volley produced an excellent save by Forster.

However, from the resulting corner, Sigurdsson’s delivery was met by the head of Mawson at the front post, to give them the advantage.

And after Nathan Redmond’s cross proved slightly too high for Maya Yoshida, Saints stopper Forster was called into action once more just before the break when he pushed Sigurdsson’s effort over the bar.

After the interval, Saints were much improved as they went in search of a response.

Boufal replaced Dušan Tadić on 56 minutes and two minutes later the Moroccan international was involved in the move that lead to the equaliser.

A neat exchange between Boufal and Davis saw the latter set the onrushing Ryan Bertrand away down the left, whose low cross was swept home by Long.

That gave Claude Puel’s men a lift and Nathan Redmond was next to sting the gloves of Lukasz Fabianski in the Swansea goal.

On 70 minutes though, the hosts lead was restored when they broke at pace through substitute and debutant Luciano Narsingh, who teed the ball up for Sigurdsson’s curling, left-footed finish.

Saints rallied in search of another leveller, with the introduction of Josh Sims and Sam McQueen late on.

Sims saw an effort inside the box blocked superbly, but despite their endeavour they could not break down an increasingly resilient Swansea side under the stewardship of Paul Clement.
