Southampton’s Under-23s were beaten 3-1 by their counterparts from Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League 2 at Stevenage’s LAMEX Stadium on Monday night.

The hosts struck all three of their goals in the first half, with Nathan Oduwa and Shilow Tracey finding the back of the net either side of an unfortunate own goal from Saints skipper Alfie Jones.

Saints made a fight of it in the second half, and reduced the deficit just before the hour mark when Ryan Seager won and converted a penalty on the rebound after his initial effort was saved.

From there, the visitors looked the more likely team to score again, and the introduction of Marcus Barnes for the final 20 minutes strengthened that, but the hosts had done more than enough in the first half to earn their win.

Spurs took the game to Saints from the off, with the visitors in their changed strip of black and grey having to defend early on.

Oduwa was a menacing presence throughout the half and he led the hosts’ first push towards goal in the second minute, before strike partner Ryan Loft went close to opening the scoring with a couple of close range efforts.

Tottenham grabbed their first goal on 28 minutes when a neat exchange between Oduwa and Will Miller down the left side of the penalty area, saw the former receive the ball from around eight yards out where he rattled a strike into the top right corner.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when Saints skipper Alfie Jones flung himself in front of Oduwa’s cross and put through his own net as he attempted to clear a low delivery into the six yard box.

Just before the break, Shilow Tracey threatened to make it three when he took aim with a low shot from inside the area, which Kingsley Latham was equal to.

However, in added time at the end of the half, Tracey went one better when he got on the end of Oduwa’s cross to hit a low shot inside the near post to make it 3-0.

Olufela Olomola was introduced for Harley Willard at the start of the second half as Saints sought a way back into the game, and they enjoyed a better spell of play after the restart as the substitute joined Ryan Seager in attack.

And that brighter spell was rewarded with a penalty handed to Saints when Callum Slattery and Seager linked up on the edge of the Spurs area where the latter was brought down inside the box by Joe Pritchard.

Seager saw his initial spot-kick saved by Tom Glover, but the striker was alert to the rebound which he fired in to reduce the deficit.

In the 63rd minute, Seager headed high and wide from Will Wood’s deep cross on the left before he made way for Marcus Barnes with 20 or so minutes remaining.

Saints pushed on in search of more goals with Olomola and Barnes creating openings for the visitors, though Tyreke Johnson couldn’t get the connection he wanted on a shot at goal.

Some brave defending kept Tottenham’s two-goal advantage intact, with Thomas O’Connor seeing a header saved by Glover after an initial good clearance from the hosts.

And Spurs would go on to see the game out with a 3-1 success, although the second half was certainly less comfortable for them than the first had been.
