Shane Long hailed an amazing night at Anfield after he netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over Liverpool to send Southampton to Wembley.
Long struck the killer blow in stoppage time when he dispatched Josh Sims’ incisive pass well beyond the reach of Loris Karius to make it 2-0 on aggregate.
Trying to sum that particular emotion, Long said: “It was amazing. Getting a winner in the last minute and knowing that’s enough to put us through with a few more minutes to hold on.
“It’s an amazing feeling in front of your own fans and there’s a lot of hard work that goes into that.
“It was a bit of relief but we were just ecstatic at the end.”
A sensational run saw Saints keep a clean sheet in every single round against Premier League opposition.
And after disappointments at times in the current campaign, Long insists the Southampton fans have got what they deserve with a trip to Wembley.
“To beat Arsenal and Liverpool along the way, we’ve done it the hard way. We had no easy games coming through,” said Long.
“It’s a massive thing for a club like Southampton to get to a final. It’s been disappointing in the league and in Europe so to give the fans something they deserve, is a day out at Wembley and hopefully a medal at the end of it.”
