Loan Watch: McCarthy's Walsall continue fine form

Jason McCarthy played 90 minutes for Walsall on Saturday, as the Saddlers continued their climb up the League One table.

Jon Whitney’s side followed up last weekend’s 4-1 victory over table-topping Sheffield United with a comprehensive 3-1 win at home to Bristol Rovers.

On-loan Celtic defender Eoghan O’Connell gave Walsall the lead on the stroke of half time, before Simeon Jackson and Joe Edwards’ second-half strikes secured all three points.

Rovers did pull one back in the closing stages, however, as Matty Taylor headed home his 16th goal of the campaign, but that was no more than a consolation.

The win lifts the Saddlers up to 13th in the League One table.

In the Championship, Sam Gallagher’s Blackburn Rovers held Birmingham City to a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park.

Despite going behind after three minutes to a Lukas Jutkiewicz penalty, Rovers fought back and levelled in first-half stoppage time through Danny Graham.

Gallagher then had a chance to seal all three points on 67 minutes. Birthday boy Liam Feeney’s cross found its way through to the Saints loanee, but he lifted his shot over the crossbar.

The point sees Blackburn remain in the Championship drop zone, but they are now level on points with Wigan who sit in 21st.

Paulo Gazzaniga also played out a 1-1 draw in Spain on the weekend, as Rayo Vallecano held Elche at home.

The Saints stopper was beaten in the first half by Guillermo Fernández to give the visitors the lead, before Nicolás Fedor Flores equalised in the 73rd minute.

The point sees Vallecano remain 17th in the Spanish Segunda División.
