Southampton returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 win against reigning champions Leicester City.

In front of watching England manager Gareth Southgate, James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez netted first-half goals against Claudio Ranieri's side in a fine display from Saints, before Dušan Tadić smashed home a late penalty to seal the win.

Ward-Prowse’s second Premier League goal of the season set the hosts on their way, as he produced a superb curling finish, before Rodriguez slammed home an instinctive second.

Unlike last season, there was to be no second-half fightback from the Foxes, with Tadić's spot-kick putting the gloss on a terrific display that saw Saints move up to 11th.

Claude Puel made just one change from Saints’ last Premier League outing at Burnley, as Rodriguez replaced birthday boy Shane Long in the starting line-up.

Dušan Tadić, rested against Norwich City in midweek, was back in for Saints and it was his cross that set up the first chance of the game. A deep ball into the box picked out Nathan Redmond, but the winger’s header was just over the bar.

Another Tadić cross, this time a drilled delivery across the penalty area, created another chance for Redmond, but this time the England Under-21 international was denied by Kasper Schmeichel.

It was from another dangerous cross, following an excellent team move, that saw the opening goal arrive. Cédric and Redmond linked well, with the former spotting Ward-Prowse unmarked, and he superbly curled the ball beyond Schmeichel.

Saints were playing with a real confidence, taking the game to the Foxes, and the second goal arrived shortly before half time.

Ward-Prowse turned provider, as his free-kick caused problems for Leicester, with Rodriguez on hand to hammer home the loose ball from a tight angle.

Ward-Prowse’s international teammate, Demarai Gray, was proving to be Leicester’s biggest threat. He almost grabbed the Foxes a lifeline following a lighting counter, but the youngster’s shot flew narrowly over the bar.

It had been a very positive afternoon for Saints up until the hour mark, when captain van Dijk had to make way through injury after a collision with Jamie Vardy.

The change, which saw Jack Stephens introduced, did little to disrupt Saints’ rhythm, and they really should have had a third five minutes later.

Højbjerg intercepted a poor pass from Christian Fuchs and raced through one-on-one, but he failed to keep his composure and fired wide again.

Wes Morgan wasted a good chance for the visitors as they pressed for a route back into the game, before Saints thought the Leicester captain had then given them a three-goal advantage.

The defender put the ball through his own net from Tadić's free-kick, but the linesman on the far side raised his flag late for an apparent offside call against Maya Yoshida.

Saints finally put the game beyond doubt with five minutes remaining, as Tadić got the goal his performance deserved, converting from the penalty spot after Morgan had felled substitute Long.

The win serves as perfect preparation for a huge EFL Cup semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.
