Claude Puel was pleased to see some of his young players gain more valuable experience, after naming a side with six former Academy players in the Emirates FA Cup win over Norwich City.
James Ward-Prowse, Sam McQueen, Harrison Reed, Josh Sims, Jack Stephens and Harry Lewis all started in the third-round replay at St Mary's, with Saints eventually prevailing 1-0, thanks to Shane Long's goal in added time.
"I think for a young team, and young players it was an interesting game, and you could see they learned in a difficult situation for the team," said Puel.
"We could have scored many goals, but to win this game and to continue to give game time to the young players to improve them is important.
"It's important for them, and for us, to improve them. It's a good opportunity to give them game time and to see them in difficult situations, because we lost in the Premier League last time out, so it was important in the replay to give a good answer. The play was good and the win is a good thing for the confidence."
