Claude Puel believes Virgil van Dijk has developed a greater consistency to his game this season.
The centre-half, who won a clean sweep of the club’s Player of the Season awards last term, has enjoyed another stellar campaign in the Saints line-up.
Van Dijk was superb in Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over Liverpool, in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, and although he has been almost an ever-present in the team, Puel says he remains fresh enough to continue to feature.
“He’s a strong man, a strong player,” he said at a press conference ahead of the trip to Burnley. "He can recover well, and it’s fantastic what he can do.
"He’s physical, he's a technical player and we are lucky to have a player with his quality and his spirit also, because he is a winner.
"He gives always the example for the team, for the young players.
"I think this season he finds consistency and every game is a good performance and this is very interesting for him and us. I think he has improved a lot this season.”
