A youthful Southampton Under-18s side suffered a 2-0 defeat away to West Ham United in their latest Under-18 Premier League fixture.

A first-half free-kick from Joe Powell and late effort from Korrey Henry were enough to secure victory for the hosts, as Will Smallbone saw his second-half strike ruled out for offside.

Saints started brightly and Smallbone had the best chance of the opening exchanges, as the midfielder dragged an early shot wide of Rihards Matrevics’ far post.

At the other end, Powell tested Alex Cull from range, but the Saints keeper clutched the long-distance effort with relative ease.

Two free-kicks almost created early breakthroughs for Craig Fleming’s men. Christoph Klarer knocked down the first for Michael Obafemi to hit the post, only for the striker to be adjudged offside.

Moments later Ben Rowthorn pushed another Smallbone delivery past the Hammers goalkeeper at the near post, but the hosts' defence were able to clear as the ball loomed towards the line.

It was, however, a West Ham free-kick that eventually broke the deadlock. Powell bent his 25-yard strike around the outside of the wall and low into Cull’s bottom corner to take the lead.

Saints looked to respond immediately. Harrison Davis made a surging run forwards and delivered a teasing cross towards the lurking Obafemi in the penalty area, but it was just too far ahead for the striker to make any meaningful contact.

A swift counter almost saw Jahmal Hector-Ingram double the Hammers’ advantage before the break, but Klarer made a vital last-minute interception to ensure Saints went into the interval just one behind.

Southampton almost found their way back into the encounter on the 64th minute as Harlem Hale slipped Obafemi in one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only for the striker to be denied by the strong hand of Matrevics.

Minutes later Saints had the ball was in the net. Smallbone played a neat one-two on the edge of the area and then curled beautifully into the far corner, only to be denied by the lineman's flag.

Not to be outdone, Saints continued to press and Obafemi broke down the left flank to cross for Siph Mdlalose at the far post, but his strike was well saved again by Matrevics.

With ten minutes to play Mdlalose was denied again from close range before Obafemi then struck over from the resulting corner; whilst, at the other end, Hammers goalscorer Powell was denied by the foot of Cull's post.

In the final minute Klarer nodded a Smallbone free-kick down for Hale to try his luck at goal, but the Saints forward's acrobatic effort was easily saved by Matrevics.

The Hammers then put the result beyond doubt in the dying seconds of the game, as Henry rifled in low from distance to double the scoreline.
