Southampton will face an Emirates FA Cup replay against Norwich City after they were denied in stoppage time in a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road.

Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the first-half when he converted a superb volley from Dušan Tadić’s cross, before Steven Whittaker’s penalty levelled things up in the second period.

Maya Yoshida then sent a thunderous header beyond the reach of Michael McGovern to restore the advantage, but there was to be a twist in the tale in stoppage time when Steven Naismith sent a header into the far corner.

Claude Puel made eight changes from the 3-0 defeat to Everton in the Premier League, handing a first-team debut to Harry Lewis, with van Dijk, Jack Stephens, Harrison Reed, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Shane Long, Josh Sims all coming in.

Long was involved inside 30 seconds, when he got behind the Norwich backline before seeing his effort drift just wide.

The Republic of Ireland international looked bright early on and not long after, he got to the byline to tee up Tadić, who saw his effort on the turn blocked by Whittaker.

In response, Martin Olsson’s well-struck free-kick after Alex Pritchard was brought down by Reed, was held comfortably by debutant Lewis.

Saints continued to dominate proceedings and Tadić drew a superb save from McGovern when he sent a curling left-footed free-kick towards goal.

Moments later, an incisive counter-attack saw Josh Sims slide an inch-perfect pass into Long’s run, but he couldn’t keep his effort down.

On 38 minutes though, they had the lead they merited when Tadić’s cross from the right found van Dijk unmarked at the back post, who made no mistake with a superbly taken volley across goal.

After the interval and it was the Canaries who started brightest, with Josh Murphy hitting the side-netting with a right-footed drive.

And they were level when Cameron Jerome’s pace caused problems inside the box and Lewis brought the forward down for a penalty, with Whittaker stepping up to convert.

Shortly after the hour mark, Long and Reed made way for Oriol Romeu and Jay Rodriguez as Puel went in search of a winner.

Tadić was soon denied by another stunning save from McGovern when he got fingertips to a fine dipping volley, after Ryan Bertand’s low centre narrowly evaded the onrushing Sims.

Pressure was building and in the 65th minute it was Yoshida who was to restore the lead.

Højbjerg’s cross saw the defender get across Norwich captain Russell Martin and power an unstoppable header beyond McGovern.

Late on, Jacob Murphy tested Lewis when he cut inside from the left and hit a low drive towards the near post, but the 19-year-old got behind the shots trajectory to save.

But Saints could not hold out and were cruelly denied in injury time when Whittaker's cross from the right was flicked into the far corner by the head of Naismith to earn the hosts a replay.
