Southampton will be without Cédric for their FA Cup visit to Norwich, while Ryan Bertrand is also a doubt for the game.

Saints visit Carrow Road in the third round of the competition tomorrow, but will do so potentially without both full-backs, as Cédric remains out following the injury he sustained in the early stages of Monday’s defeat at Everton.

Bertrand did not make the starting line-up at Goodison Park due to illness, and has continued to battle that this week.

"Soares will not be available, after his injury against Everton,” said Puel. “I think perhaps also Bertrand, who was ill all the week, and after that we will see.”

With another three games coming up in the next week, including the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool, Puel says a number of players will need to be ready for action.

"I think it's important to keep always a good balance between experienced players and young players,” he said.

“But now, for example, we are in the semi-final of the League Cup against Liverpool. At the beginning, we played with young players, with motivation and with good spirit and quality, and we can see many good players now, with Reed, Sims, Hesketh, McQueen, Stephens, and I think it's important to continue this work and with a good balance with experienced players.

“I think it's important to develop and continue to develop the young players, but also to qualify. It's just finding the good balance on the pitch.”
