Nathan Redmond feels Southampton possess one of the best defenders in the Premier League in Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch international has continued to impress at the heart of defence so far this term, helping the team to seven clean sheets.
In the 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth, van Dijk won 100% of his aerial duels, and Redmond says he is benefitting from going up against him in training.
“He’s one of the best centre halves I’ve played with. His performances have spoken for themselves recently,” said Redmond.
“It’s good because if I’m playing against one of the best in the league in training, it’s only going to help me.
“He’s composed, calm on the ball, quick, athletic and he has popped up with some fantastic defensive displays. His all-round game is very strong.
“He’s a strong presence in the dressing room. He’s a great character and gets on with all the boys.”
Claude Puel’s side have now scored 28 goals in all competitions at the other end of the pitch and sit 7th in the Premier League for Christmas.
Redmond continued: “It is about buying into the new manager’s philosophy and that is attacking and defending as a team.
“When you have a solid base, you know that you have the freedom to express yourself knowing that if anything goes wrong, there’s a strong backing.
“We’ve got goals in the team and there was a time when we couldn’t stop scoring.”
