Southampton face Reading tomorrow night in round two of the Checkatrade Trophy. Here’s our comprehensive match preview of the tie.
What’s at stake?
After the Under-18s secured FA Youth Cup victory away at Manchester United last week, Saints will now be hoping to also progress in this cup competition.
A place in round three and a trip to Huish Park to face League Two side Yeovil Town awaits the victors at St Mary’s, after the Glovers saw off MK Dons to cement their place in the next stage.
A victory for Saints would see them progress as one of the final Under-23s sides in the competition. Only their Brighton and Swansea counterparts have earned a place in round three, with Leicester still to face Cheltenham to secure their spot.
Southampton’s last five:
Sunderland (h) L 0-2
Newcastle (h) W 3-0
Everton (h) D 1-1
Chelsea (a) L 3-2
Crawley Town (h) W 4-0
